GIRLS BASKETBALL: Rangeley, Valley girls play wild game
For those who missed it and for the fortunate ones who didn't, Rangeley and Valley put on a good show in the Western D girls championship game Saturday afternoon at the Augusta Civic Center. Valley sophomore guard Cindy Schultz hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left and then drew a charge on Allie Hammond to give second-seeded Valley a thrilling 40-39 victory.
It was a terrific game, albeit a strange one.
Schultz set a record for most 3-pointers in a Western D tournament with 13. She had four Saturday, although none bigger than her last.
"I didn't think I would get it," is all she could say about the record, which previously was nine.
Rangeley scored 27 of its 39 points in the second quarter, including 14 from Angela White. At one point in the quarter, White scored 10 straight points for the Lakers (14-7).
She scored six in a 20-second span late in the quarter, making a mess of one scribe's scorebook.
Hammond capped a 13-4 Rangeley run with a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer. The Lakers led 31-22 at the half.
But Valley didn't go away. The Cavaliers chipped away at the lead until Schultz buried her second 3-pointer of the fourth quarter with 12 seconds left.
"In the locker room, we said we were down nine points at halftime but we had 16 minutes to play and that we could do this," Schultz said. "We stayed in the game."
So did Rangeley, despite making just two field goals in the second half.
"We had our opportunities, but our kids will learn from this," Rangeley coach Heidi Deery said.

After graduating from the University of Maine, Lazarczyk lanquished in the public relations biz for a few years before finally joining the news game in 1999. He worked at the Berlin (N.H.) Reporter for a year before joining the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal in July, 2000. Lazarczyk covers football, basketball and baseball. A native of Rutland, Vt., Lazarczyk over-analyzes the New England Patriots and does a spot-on impersonation of Barney from "The Simpsons."
Scott Martin is the Executive Sports Editor for the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel. A graduate of Lake Region High School and the University of Maine, Martin has worked at the newspapers for more than 10 years, covering high school sports for the majority of that time.
