Beckett to start Saturday; roster at 37

Josh Beckett, who was scratched from his Monday start because of back spasms, is feeling better and will make his next start, Saturday, manager Terry Francona said.

Francona also said Tim Wakefield is still set for Wednesday (and Jon Lester for Thursday), although Wakefield was sent to the bullpen Monday as the game was getting out of hand. The game was shortened by rain and Wakefield was not needed.

But Boston is concerned about running out of arms, so the Red Sox added another player to the active roster. Fernando Cabrera, a reliever for Pawtucket most of the season, was called up.

Cabrera had to be added to the 40-man roster first. To make room, the Red Sox put first baseman Aaron Bates on the 60-day disabled list (60-day DL guys do not count on the 40-man roster).

That puts the active roster at 37 and, yes, it is crowded in the Red Sox clubhouse.

Here is tonight's lineup as Boston tries to finally clinch a playoff spot:

Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Victor Martinez, C
Kevin Youkilis, 3B
David Ortiz, DH
Jason Bay, LF
J.D. Drew, RF
Casey Kotchman, 1B
Alex Gonzalez, SS
(Clay Buchholz, P)

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox — when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
