First scrimmage

Maine football will play its first of three preseason scrimmages on Saturday night. Game time: 3:15 to 5:25 p.m.

The game will allow the first live hitting since Wednesday, and should feature the starters a bit more than the 2s and 3s on the depth chart.

Here are some off-the-radar players to watch out for:

  1. Corner Steve Barker. He missed all of last year with a shoulder injury but has been having a good camp.
  2. Running back Roosevelt Boone. Boone took a lot of reps in spring football, and could play himself into a regular role.
  3. Nose tackle Ryan Nani. Nani, a junior, is backing up sophomore Kevin Phanor, but is reportedly having a strong camp.

Other notes:

  • Tailback Derek Session was back in pads today, after missing a couple of practices for being "dinged up."
