Message inspires Black Bears

When the Maranacook football team showed up for practice Thursday afternoon, a message awaited them.

It didn’t come from a coach. Nor a player. No, this message came from an anonymous person.

“It was a speech and it was laminated and it was put up on our shed door,” Maranacook senior Ben Johnson said. “It was unbelievable. It was just taped up to the door.”

Johnson couldn’t recall the exact words, but said it was an inspirational message directed to the team, which hosts Winthrop on Friday night. The school will dedicate the Ricky Gibson Field of Dreams in what promises to be an emotional evening in Readfield.

Ricky Gibson III died in April of an inoperable brain tumor.

Did the message leave an impact?

“It definitely did on me,” Johnson said. “I know our coach was visibly shaken, too. It just said, and I’m paraphrasing, what it means to protect this house.”
