Dunlap releases 4 ballot questions

Secretary of State Matt Dunlap put out four ballot questions Friday that are now subject to a 30-day comment period.

A new state law requires that Dunlap give the public until July 27 to react to the way he’s written the questions. All four were brought forward by citizen initiative and because the Legislature failed to enact them, they will be on the November ballot.

 Here are the proposed questions:

"Do you want to cut the rate of the excise tax on newer vehicles that owners pay to towns by about half and exempt some energy-efficient vehicles from the sales tax?"

"Do you want to change the medical marijuana laws to allow treatment of more medical conditions and to expand the methods of distribution?"

"Do you want to change Maine law to require voter approval for state and local tax and spending increases over certain limits?"

"Do you want to repeal the 2007 law on school consolidation and restore the laws previously in effect?"

The ballot will also likely have at least one, if not two, people’s veto questions (gay marriage/tax reform) and at least one bond question.

If you want to give Dunlap feedback on any of the four questions listed above, you can:

 Send an e-mail: sos.office@maine.gov

Use snail mail Secretary of State, Attn: Public Comment, 148 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0148
