Mills, Mitchell on Kennedy

The death of Sen. Ted Kennedy is prompting many to reflect on his life, both from a personal and political perspective. So far today, I've spoken with Attorney General Janet Mills, who was a Ted Kennedy delegate to the national convention in 1980, and Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell, D-Vassalboro.

We'll have comments from many others in Thursday's paper, but here's what I've got so far:

Attorney General Janet Mills, a Ted Kennedy delegate at the 1980 Democratic National Convention
“I think he was remarkably generous and passionate about public policy and the things that mattered for the American people. He was born into a family that had everything in terms of material goods but he chose public service. His legacy is his belief that health care is a right, not a privilege and his advocacy for some form of universal health care.”

Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell, D-Vassalboro
“His legacy is front and center as we speak as the whole country is locked in a debate on health care. Nothing was more important to him than making sure everyone had health care. His words are going to echo across this state and across this country as the debate goes on.”
