Baxter State Park opens two Katahdin Trails

<!--StartFragment-->

Baxter State Park officials have opened the Abol Trail and
the Hunt Trail for the 2009 hiking season. These trails provide access to
Baxter Peak — the highest point in the state of Maine.

All other Katahdin trails, including the Saddle, Cathedral,
Knife Edge and Helon Taylor trails, remain closed to hiking until conditions
improve.

On the north end of the park, all trails are now open
including the Traveler Loop trail beginning at South Branch Pond Campground.

The Park’s 50 mile long Tote road is now open to vehicle
traffic from Togue Pond Gate to Matagamon Gate.

Visitors are advised to call park headquarters at 723-5140
or visit the park’s Web site baxterstateparkauthority.com for up-to-date
information before traveling to the park.
