WAYNE -- On a brisk November Saturday with a hint of snow in the air, 12 Wayne Elementary School parents, assisted by a tractor, forklift, dump truck, and assorted chain and reciprocating saws, dismantled and removed parts of the school's playground structure marked as being unsalvageable. The structure had stood encircled by an orange safety fence and gone unused for a year. Working from 8 a.m. to around 2:30 p.m. with only brief coffee and pizza breaks, the crew could not accomplish all they had hoped to. They did succeed in filling two standard dump truck loads, which went to the Readfield transfer station. The Selectmen charged Ireland's committee with collecting and reviewing all relevant information in order to determine the parts of the playground that should be demolished and to write a proposal recommending future actions. Meeting twice a month, the committee reviewed studies by the structure's designer Leathers, the insurance company, and toxicology and playground safety experts. It then made a walk-through and marked what needed to go because of structural integrity. The main arguments against repair are leaching arsenic, structural deterioration, and splintering wood in the play structure, built in the 1990's with donated labor and materials by a highly dedicated group of Wayne parents and citizens. Ireland says the committee performed two arsenic wipe tests, in which the pressure-treated wood is wiped and the arsenic that comes out of the wood onto the wipe is measured. One was performed before applying a sealant "EPL" and the other after. The tests showed a drastic though not complete reduction in leaching. The committee has not yet looked at whether the post-sealant level is acceptable under current safety standards. According to Ireland, the work of the committee is proceeding well. They have been operating through consensus decision-making and have agreed that they will develop one proposal to present to the Selectmen. "Everybody in the committee has to be able to live with that proposal. We will work until we develop a proposal everybody can live with." All agree that whatever happens, the playground must meet the most recent safety standards. The committee's meetings are advertised locally, held in the elementary school, and the public is invited. Ireland, who has children in the fifth and second grades, moved to Wayne with his wife after their marriage in 1996. His family has been in Wayne for more than 50 years. Assistant principal in Sabbattus' K-8 school, he says that the reason why they have stayed in Wayne is that it is "fantastic for raising small children. People help each other, take care of each other. All the staff members in the school know all the kids regardless of whether they have taught them. The people are the #1 thing that makes it great."
