No Fenway date for Dogs this year; another Mariners pick-up

The Red Sox announced their annual Futures at Fenway match-ups and, for the first time, the doubleheader will not have either a Triple-A or Double-A team playing.

Who dat catcher?

Caught up a little in the Saints euphoria at the moment. But after tonight, it's baseball time. Pitchers and catchers will report soon.

Non-roster invitees announced

The Red Sox announced today which players not on the 40-man roster have been invited to the major league spring training camp:

There are prospects, and there is Joe Nelson

When reliever Joe Nelson reported to the Portland Sea Dogs in 2004, he was 29 and looked like any other journeyman minor league pitcher trying to hang on.

Tickets

Some ticket information for you:

The under-achieving (so far) Hermida is under contract

Jeremy Hermida avoided arbitration by signing for a reported $3.345-million contract with the Boston Red Sox.

The other side of the tracks

By now, you've read about pitcher Casey Kelly and shortstop Jose Iglesias, the two mega-prospects taking part in the Red Sox rookie development camp.

Where Lowrie fits in; rookie camp starts

Jed Lowrie was the starting shortstop for the Red Sox in the 2008 playoffs. He could be starting the 2010 season in Pawtucket.

The moves continue: Ellsbury to left, Kotchman to leave

A day after the news came out about Boston signing third baseman Adrian Beltre, the Red Sox continue fiddling with their roster.

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox — when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
